In conjunction with Northampton’s Arts Night Out, on Friday May 10th, UNITE will host a gallery reception for artists Justin Norris and Sam Hollier from 6-9pm. Refreshments will be served. Their work will be on display and for sale until June 7th.

Justin Norris is a self-taught student of multimedia expressions ranging from graffiti to fine art, and dance. Beginning his exploration with visual art about 14 years ago, Norris began his experimentations in graffiti, and has gradually worked his way onto canvas and other non-traditional mediums although still preserving his roots by continuing to use aerosol as a medium.

Norris is currently a freelance visual problem solver attending Hampshire College. He has also been a residence dancer in a few notable dance companies. Justin is an avid world traveler, using his multifaceted skill-set as a means to spread his work globally.

Sam collects artifacts distorted beyond their ability to function. Though cultural and personal connections remain, he attempts to disregard these, focusing on the formal properties of the objects. Sam’s interaction with materials is physical and instinctive, impulsively following hunches and urges, lashing pieces together, bending them, hammering things into place, breaking off the excess. Thoughts and plans restrict this reactive interplay imposing an image on the material rather than responding deliberately without planning. This process of de/construction is what he is drawn to so it continues to remain exposed in the final arrangements.

Opening Reception: Friday, April 12th, 6pm to 9pm

Emmalyn Hicks is a visual artist and educator living in Northampton, Massachusetts. She creates custom original artwork for local bands, small businesses, and writers. Additionally, she creates stylized representational and abstract paintings for the home, based carefully on the interests of those who inhabit the space as well as the space itself.

Emmalyn is fascinated by connecting concrete ideas such as music, culture, and the environment to her often abstract art. This particular show is inspired by the vibrance, joy, and excitement brought on by the coming of spring. The pieces in this show are also inspired by and created for some individuals very close to the artist, to represent the joy in their lives (that which has come, and that which we look forward to).

Emmalyn also works as an ESL teacher in an elementary school in Holyoke and teaches yoga when she can find the time in her busy life.

Lance Mountain has teamed up with Nike SB to create a special edition low-top Dunk in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Skatepark of Tampa. Appearing in a predominately black colorway, the collaborative kicks see Mountain’s Doughboy design across the entirety of the upper while SPoT‘s 20th anniversary logo adorns the custom insoles. Metallic silver detailing appears on the Swoosh and text branding while mint green lines the shoe and hits the Swoosh underlays and heel tabs. Capped off with a contrasting white midsole, the Lance Mountain x SPoT x Nike SB collab.
